Descending Stories

Descending Stories by Haruko Kumota (Kodansha) is an adult drama about the world of rakugo storytellers. Fresh out of prison with nothing to his name, a hapless young man sets his heart on rakugo, Japan's art of comic storytelling, after seeing the great master Yakumo Yurakutei VIII perform. Yakumo never takes apprentices, but he takes this one, nicknaming him Yotaro, "the fool." Something about Yotaro reminds the old master of someone from his own past.
